Bound to Happen: Defending Our Green Cred
We noticed in the last issue of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association (SOHA) newsletter that they’re concerned our development
We want to put their minds at ease that we share their concern about the environment. Ralphs Fresh Fare will be at the forefront of green building and sustainability. It may be time for a new logo and here’s why…
Ralphs is going beyond what is required by California when it comes to sustainability standards. The new Ralphs Fresh Fare is striving for LEED Certification, which is a rating system that analyzes environmental and energy sustainability. Also, the design of the new Ralphs Fresh Fare will reduce its energy use beyond the California code to attain Energy Star Certification, which requires Ralphs to measure and report energy use to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for 12 months prior to certification.
Curious about some of the snazzy features planned for the new Ralphs? Here’s a taste…
- -Skylights and an energy management system for automated lighting control
- -Cool roofing materials and daylighted parking below the platform store to reduce the heat island effect
- -LED lighting in refrigerated glass door cases and spot lights
- -Efficient plumbing systems designed to consume 20% less potable water than a normal grocery store
- -Long lasting color concrete floors will replace flooring with chemical adhesive that requires constant maintenance and waxing
- -Night time refrigerated case covers
- -Landscaping and sidewalks for increased walkability
- -Promotion of alternate forms of transportation
- -Posting of bike routes and secure bike storage
- -Preferred parking for hybrids and carpools
Kroger, Ralphs’ parent company, has also been recognized as a corporation for reducing its overall energy consumption more than 27%! In case you’re wondering how much energy that is; it is enough energy to power every single family home in Memphis, Tennessee for one year! That’s a lot of energy saved. And that is only the beginning for Kroger. Their goal is 30% energy reduction in 2010 through the use of various green practices including: LED lighting, delivery transportation efficiency, plastic bag reduction and recycling programs.
Hopefully this information puts inquiring minds at ease. The new Sherman Oaks Ralphs Fresh Fare will be energy efficient and sustainable. With any luck, it’s contagious!
